Hello and welcome!
I'm delighted that you've stopped by.
The following pages feature examples of my work. I hope you will enjoy browsing them. As a craftsman, my first objective is to faithfully render the author's intended meaning. Then, I strive to produce a text that readers can enjoy without experiencing a sense of foreignness -- as if the material were not a translation at all and had been written in English in the first place.
I was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and spent my formative decades in Salzburg. I earned an Austrian “Matura,” hold an MA in German, and established my credentials with translations of works by Wilhelm Reich. My first published translation appeared in 1975.
Preparing a translation for publication ("for the printer") involves a substantial amount of careful editing. It is a time-consuming task that requires a trained eye. I have uploaded an sample from a book I recently edited. If you would like to discuss either a translating or an editing project, please contact me. You will profit from my track record and impeccable knowledge of German. How can I earn your business?
I am a member of . . .
The PEN American Center, because “PEN stands for the principle of unhampered transmission of thought within each nation and among all nations.” I endorse a free press and oppose “the suppression of freedom of expression.”
The American Council on Germany, because its members include some of the most constructive thinkers in the field of US-German relations. The Council is uniquely equipped to further dialogue and the exchange of ideas between Germany and the US. For example, through its Young Leader Programs and McCloy Fellowships.
The American Translators Association, because in our times the societal and commercial value of translators often receives little recognition—particularly in the United States, where important voices from other parts of the world frequently remain completely unheard.
